Quickie Super Smash Bros.: Melee Preview

by
Julius Bautista

Saturday, December 1, 2001

Beat the begeezus out of your favorite Nintendo characters *again* the week of Dec. 3rd.

Title:
Super Smash Bros.: Melee

Platform:
GameCube

Publisher:
Nintendo

Developer:
HAL Laboratory

# of Players: 1-4

Genre: Fighting

Origin: Japan

Expected Release: December 2001

Grapevine: "Make Pikachu 'kiss the sky' once again."

The widely anticipated sequel to the N64's all-star brawler will be shipping to North American retailers on December 3rd. Besides a lovely graphic upgrade, Super Smash Bros.: Melee presents the biggest "party" of Nintendo franchises we'll ever lay eyes on. Melee promises about 25 playabe characters, nearly 30 multiplayer stages, new gameplay modes, new bonus stages, single player "adventure mode" stages, new weapons & items, collectable trophies, and that same chaotic gameplay style that made the original quite addicting. It's geared to be one of the most-played Cube titles early in the system's lifetime.

Here's a quick incomprehensive breakdown of Melee's features:

* Roughly 25 playable characters, 14 of which make up the default batch. The defaults are confirmed to be:
- Mario
- Pikachu
- Bowser Koopa
- Princess Peach
- Yoshi
- Donkey Kong
- Captain Falcon
- Fox McCloud
- Ness
- Ice-Climbers (Bobo and Nana as "one" character)
- Kirby
- Samus
- Princess Zelda (can transform into Sheik)
- Link
Of course, the rest of the characters are "secret" and must be unlocked in various ways.

* Nearly 30 multiplatform stages, covering a wide spectrum of Nintendo's game history. A handful of the stages are remakes from the predecessor, while the others are newly themed from the likes of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 2, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario 64, Pokemon Stadium, Donkey Kong Country, F-Zero X, Star Fox 64, Earthbound, Ice Climbers, Kirby's Dreamland, Super Metroid, and The Legend of Zelda.

* New items and weapons like the Umbrella, food platters, disfunctional hammers, Super Mushrooms, Poison Mushrooms, new Pokemon creatures, and the Super Scope 6.

* Detailed character models, animations, and newly orchestrated renditions of all stage music.

For those who're looking forward to SSB:Melee, hopefully you bought your extra controllers already, 'cuz they'll definitely disappear from stores next week. Get 'em before they're gone.
