The Xbox launch was one of the largest console launches on memory. Here are some of our memories.
The launch of the Microsoft Xbox on the 15th of November was one of the largest console launches in history. Almost 300,000 consoles were available at launch day and that was barely a drop in the barrel. Most of the 300,000 units had been spoken for and were not available to people who had not pre-ordered. In fact, VGLN.com (none of the staff pre-ordered) did not get an Xbox until a week after launch.
The Xbox launch was fairly successful with consumers in many respects. It can claim to be the highest selling console over a 2-week period, outpacing Nintendo's Gamecube and Sony's PS2 during the first 2 weeks of their respective launches. Also, it owns the record for the console who sold the most games at launch with Xbox buyers purchasing 2.4 games per a console compared to the Nintendo Gamecube's 1.9. Although the first couple of weeks of a console's life barely tell the whole story, one must admit the Xbox is doing well for the time being.
