Sony generates nearly $1 billion in revenue during the launch of two rival consoles.
In startling news, NPD Group reported that Sony's PS2 and its software carried the month of November for 2001. This comes as a surprise to most who believed the Microsoft Xbox and its games carried that particular month. Accounting for more than $700 million in retail revenue during that same time frame, Sony blew away both Microsoft and Nintendo with the closest competitor being almost $100 million behind in second place. And as the company previously proclaimed, it expects to generate an additional $1 billion in retail revenue in the month of December.
Analysts believe that the strong sales of the PlayStation 2 can be credited to its noteworthy software lineup that includes Konami's Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty which stood tall as the top selling videogame across all platforms in the month of November. Overall, five of the top 10 selling software titles according to the TRST reports were for PlayStation or PlayStation 2 and software titles for these two consoles accounted for 60 percent of the overall sales volume.
