Sony's looks to expand its internet reach in anticipation of the age of online gaming.
Sony Corp. has begun negotiating with Fujitsu Ltd. in order to explore the possibility of acquiring its sibling company, Nifty Corp, according to a report from The Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
Nifty Corp., a Japan-based Internet service provider (ISP), boasts around five million subscribers, enough to give it the largest market share of any ISP in that country. Sony is considering integrating the unit with its own ISP, Sony Communication Network Corp., which is the sixth largest ISP in Japan, with over 1.6 million subscribers.
Sony and Fujitsu executives first met in November to discuss the deal, and are slated to make a final decision about the transaction by February.
Sony’s attempt to add to its ISP holdings comes at a time when it's trying to get its PlayStation 2 console online around the world.
