IBM and Toshiba working to develop MPU for new hardware.
A Reuters story cites a Kyodo news agency report as stating that Sony Corp. is actively working on a successor to its PlayStation 2.
While that may not be earth-shattering news in itself, the story does report that Sony is developing the console with an eye towards a 2005 release. Early estimations claim the next PlayStation’s microprocessing unit (MPU) will be about 200 times faster than those used in similar machines today.
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Toshiba Corp. and International business Machine Corp. (IBM) are jointly working—and spending around $400 million—to develop the new MPU. Coincidentally, IBM also helped to develop the Gamecube hardware during the console's early stages.
