A considerable increase in PS2 production will commense as Sony plans more Taiwan plants.
According to a report from the Commercial Times of Taiwan, Sony Corp., in a bid to meet strong demand for its PlayStation 2, is planning to increase production of the console to 2 million units per month, up from 1.4 million.
The publication indicated that the production increase would most likely be outsourced to Taiwanese contract makers Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. and Asustek Computer Inc. The two companies were enlisted by Sony to produce PlayStation 2’s at the end of 2001 in a bid to make production of the console more cost effective.
The Market Information Center under the Institute for Information Industry predicts that Sony “is likely to deliver 19.8 million PS2 units in 2002.” Sony is expected to seek fully two-thirds of the PS2’s production in Taiwan in the near future.
