It's official, one of the most successful consoles in history is now online as well.
Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) is officially taking its PlayStation 2 online today, with the release of the system’s Network Adapter. Retailing for $39.99, the adapter will allow both dial-up and broadband Internet users to play certain games online. A bundle with the adapter includes start-up software, demos of Madden NFL 2003 and Frequency Online, as well as a rebate coupon good for a copy of Twisted Metal: Black Online. Various Internet service providers will be offered for those who currently lack an Internet connection. SCEA plans to ship a quarter million of the devices in its first couple weeks at retail and 400,000 by year-end. Also, readily available today is SCEA’s first-party tactical team-based title, Socom: U.S. Navy Seals, which of course supports online play. With an MSRP of $59.99, Socom also comes with a voice recognition headset, which can be used to communicate in-game with other online players. Socom is rated “M” (Mature).
