High sales for Konami titles seem to be a direct result of large PS2 presence.
A Reuters story issued today, cites Enterbrain Inc. sales numbers to crown Konami Corp. the top software seller in Japan for the April – September 2002 time period. Konami, boosted by World Soccer Winning Eleven 6 for the PlayStation 2, the top selling game overall with 974,605 units sold, sold 3.2 million games in the period. That was enough to beat out 2001’s top software vendor, Nintendo Co. Ltd., who had sales of 2.4 million units in this year’s six-month stretch. Bandai Co. finished in third place, with 1.7 million units sold. Hardware wise, Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 2 was the clear-cut winner, moving 1.62 million units in the April to September period. GameCube slotted at number two, with 303,807 units sold, followed by Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox, with a dismal total of 88,768 units sold. Overall for the period, total console machine sales, including handheld devices, fell 29.4 percent from the same period a year-ago to 3.34 million units. Total software sales also slipped, falling 9.0 percent to 21.22 million units.
