Plant will help produce the PS3 among other things in the coming years.
According to a Reuters report, Sony Corp. will invest 200 billion yen (approximately $1.67 billion U.S.) over the next three years on a “cutting-edge” microchip plant.
Sony expects that the chips (code named “cell”) eventually emerging from the new facility will become a global standard for use in consumer electronics devices, game consoles (PlayStation 3) and computer servers alike.
Sony, along with Toshiba Corp. and IBM, has been jointly working on the new “cell” chip since 2001.
According to other reports, Sony may also invest some 40 – 50 billion yen in Toshiba’s new chip-making plant, which will manufacture microprocessors for use in the PlayStation and other products.
