CNN.com reports PSP will not launch this year.
CNN is reporting that Sony Corp. has pushed back the release of its PSP handheld gaming system until 2005. Originally slated to appear to launch at the end of 2004, the new date is sometime before March 31, 2005. The delay seems reasonable and will only add a few months to the official release date. A postponement extends to only the North American and European markets, as the device is apparently still on schedule to be issued in Japan this holiday season. A spokesperson said the release was delayed in order to ensure the presence of a “reasonable” amount of software titles at the PSP’s launch. Stewart Halpern, an analyst for RBC Capital Markets, termed the delay “no big deal,” at least in terms its affect on publishers, because none “had been counting on PSP game sales to make a noticeable contribution in the 2004 calendar year."
