"Simplify mobile java standards" says Nokia spokewoman.
Nokia and Vodafone have teamed up to form a mobile service architecture initiative, in which the pair aims to “simplify mobile Java standards by defining the next generation, open standards-based mobile Java services architecture specifications.”
Nokia and Vodafone say they have received support from Orange, Siemens, Sony Ericsson, Sun Microsystems and T-Mobile International and expect some of those mobile companies to join them in their quest.
The new initiative will operate within the Java Community Process and has already seen a pair of Java Specification Requests—JSR 248 and 249—approved by the J2ME Executive Committee. Sun Microsystems will handle the creation and licensing of Technology Compatibility Kits for JSR 248 and 249.
Alan Brenner, vice president of Sun Microsystems, added, "As the inventor of Java Technologies, Sun welcomes the leadership of Vodafone and Nokia to spearhead such an important effort within the JCP.”
