Tokyo Game Show: No online play for Gran Turismo 4

Tokyo Game Show serves as stage for somber announcement.

At the Tokyo Game Show, Sony and Polyphony Digital informed media in attendence that Gran Turismo 4 will make it out this year, but without an online mode.

The game is now scheduled to launch in Japan on December 3 and in North America and Europe on December 14. Online play, long a selling point for the 4th game in the series, was seemingly removed after Polyphony Digital could not get "it working" correctly.

It's not all bad, however, for racing enthusiasts. Sony plans to launch another Gran Turismo with online play sometime in 2005. No details were disclosed about the new title, but it will most likely be a quick, budget-priced follow-up to GT4 that will finally give players an online mode and perhaps a few new cars and tracks.
